Chelation

Definition

The binding of metal micronutrients (iron, manganese, zinc, copper) by organic compounds (chelates) to keep them in a soluble, plant-available form. Chelated fertilizers prevent nutrient lock-up in alkaline soils where metal ions would otherwise precipitate.
