Definition
Biome characterized by hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters, supporting drought-adapted shrubs and herbs. Also called maquis (Mediterranean basin), chaparral (California), fynbos (South Africa), and mallee (Australia). Fire is a natural and important ecological process in these systems.
