Double Fertilization

Definition

A unique feature of angiosperms in which one sperm fertilizes the egg (forming the diploid zygote) while the second sperm fuses with the polar nuclei (forming the triploid endosperm). This ensures that nutritive tissue only develops alongside an embryo.
