Pome
Definition
A fleshy fruit in which the edible flesh is derived from the enlarged receptacle (hypanthium) rather than the ovary itself, which forms the core. Apples, pears, quinces, medlars, and hawthorns are all pomes, characteristic of the subfamily Maloideae in the rose family.
