Definition
A member of the family Fabaceae (formerly Leguminosae), typically bearing seeds in pods. Legumes (beans, peas, lentils, soybeans, peanuts) are the primary plant source of protein and are uniquely valuable for nitrogen fixation through root nodule symbioses.
