Stratification (seeds)

Definition

The treatment of seeds with a period of cold (cold stratification) or warm-cold-warm (double stratification) conditions to overcome dormancy and trigger germination. Many trees and woodland perennials (roses, hawthorns, trilliums) require stratification, mimicking natural winter conditions.
