Nut (botanical)

Definition

A hard, dry, indehiscent (non-splitting) fruit with a single seed, derived from a single ovary with a hardened pericarp (fruit wall). True botanical nuts include acorns, hazelnuts, and chestnuts. Many culinary 'nuts' (almonds, walnuts, cashews) are not true nuts.
