Protoplast Fusion

Definition

The fusion of isolated plant protoplasts (cells with cell walls removed) to create hybrid cells that can regenerate into plants. Protoplast fusion can create somatic hybrids between species that cannot be sexually crossed, though it is rarely used commercially.
