Definition
The sudden collapse and death of seedlings at or near the soil surface, caused by soilborne fungi and oomycetes (Pythium, Rhizoctonia, Fusarium). Damping off is favored by cool, wet, poorly aerated growing conditions and overcrowded seedlings.
