Aa microtidis

Aa microtidis

Aa microtidis is a terrestrial orchid in the family Orchidaceae, order Asparagales, belonging to the Andean genus Aa. The species epithet microtidis is derived from Greek roots suggesting a relationship or resemblance to something very small, possibly referring to a resemblance in morphology to the related genus Myrosmodes or to small-scale features of the flower or vegetative parts that define this species within the genus. Aa microtidis is a compact herbaceous perennial adapted to the high-altitude grassland ecosystems of the Andes in South America, including the páramo and puna biomes that occur at elevations typically above 3,000 meters across Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and northern Argentina. Like all members of genus Aa, this orchid grows from a basal rosette of firm, elliptic leaves, producing an erect flowering stem that bears a dense raceme of small flowers. The flowers are structurally intricate, as characteristic of the entire orchid family, featuring three sepals, two lateral petals, and a specialized third petal modified into the lip. The lip and column structure of Aa microtidis likely reflects specific adaptations for pollination by particular small insects — including flies and small bees — that are active in high-Andean grassland environments. The genus Aa is taxonomically challenging, and the boundaries between some species — including Aa microtidis — have been subject to differing interpretations by orchid specialists over the years. Molecular phylogenetic studies are progressively clarifying relationships within this group. Threats to Aa microtidis include the degradation of páramo and puna grasslands from livestock grazing, burning, and agricultural encroachment at lower elevations.
