Abies pindrow, commonly known as Pindrow fir or west Himalayan fir, is a large evergreen conifer in the family Pinaceae, order Pinales. Its native range extends across the western Himalayan region, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, northern India (Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh), Nepal, and Bhutan. The species inhabits moist temperate Himalayan forests at elevations typically ranging from 2,000 to 3,500 meters, forming extensive stands often mixed with Himalayan cedar (Cedrus deodara), blue pine (Pinus wallichiana), and various oaks and maples. Mature trees are among the taller firs, reaching 40 to 55 meters in height, with straight columnar trunks and narrowly pyramidal crowns. Bark is grayish-brown and smooth on young trees, developing deep fissures with age. One of the distinguishing features of Abies pindrow is its unusually long needles, which can reach 5 to 8 centimeters — among the longest in the genus — and have deeply notched tips. Needles are dark green above with white stomatal bands beneath. Seed cones are large, erect, and cylindrical, measuring 12 to 18 centimeters, deep purple at maturity before disintegrating on the tree. Abies pindrow provides important ecological services in Himalayan watersheds, stabilizing steep slopes and regulating water flow. Its timber is locally used for construction and has been subject to commercial forestry. The species is also cultivated in temperate botanical gardens as an ornamental tree.
