Abildgaardia pachyptera is a sedge in the family Cyperaceae, order Poales. The specific epithet pachyptera combines the Greek roots for thick and wing, suggesting that this species bears achenes or other structures with notably thickened wings or keels. Winged or keeled achenes are found in several Cyperaceae genera and represent an adaptation that can aid in wind or water dispersal of seeds. This morphological trait is taxonomically informative and helps distinguish species within Abildgaardia and related genera. As with other members of the genus, Abildgaardia pachyptera is a grass-like herb of tropical and subtropical habitats. Cyperaceae species in this genus typically colonise open, sunny environments such as tropical savannas, wet grasslands, rocky hillsides, and the margins of watercourses and seasonal wetlands. The plant produces tufted basal leaves and slender stems bearing inflorescences of one or more spikelets. The flowers are small and wind-pollinated, enclosed within overlapping scale-like glumes. After pollination, the achene fruit develops and is subsequently dispersed. Sedges of this family form important components of tropical and subtropical ground-layer communities, contributing to primary productivity, habitat complexity, and food web support. They are consumed by a range of granivorous birds and small mammals, and their dense tufted growth provides shelter for invertebrates. The taxonomy of Abildgaardia continues to be refined as herbarium collections from tropical regions are studied and molecular analyses clarify species boundaries.
