Abolboda pulchella is a herbaceous monocot in the family Xyridaceae, order Poales, native to the tropical savannas and highland wetlands of South America. The specific epithet pulchella, meaning beautiful or pretty in Latin, suggests this species possesses particularly attractive morphological features, likely referring to its flowers, which are among the more ornamental within the genus. Abolboda pulchella is distributed across the Guiana Highlands and adjacent lowland savannas of Venezuela, Guyana, northern Brazil, and possibly Colombia and Suriname, where it inhabits seasonally flooded grasslands, wet rocky outcrops, and boggy tepui landscapes. The plant grows as a rosette of narrow, linear leaves emerging from a condensed basal stem. These leaves are stiff and upright, a morphological strategy shared by many plants in nutrient-poor, high-light savanna environments. The waxy or slightly glossy leaf surface may help reflect excess solar radiation and reduce water loss. The flowering scapes of Abolboda pulchella are slender and erect, rising well above the vegetative rosette to display the terminal flower spike. Flowers are trimerous, with three delicate petals that in this species may be particularly well-formed or brightly colored, consistent with the epithet pulchella. Blue to violet coloration is common in the genus, creating a visually striking display against the tawny grasses of the surrounding savanna. The Xyridaceae family to which this species belongs is a small family of approximately 400 species, with its greatest diversity in tropical South America. Abolboda and its sister genus Xyris are the two principal genera of the family, together accounting for nearly all Xyridaceae species diversity.
