Abolboda uniflora is a herbaceous monocot in the family Xyridaceae, order Poales, belonging to the entirely Neotropical genus Abolboda. The specific epithet uniflora means one-flowered, indicating that the flowering scape of this species bears a single flower or that the inflorescence is reduced to a solitary floral unit, a distinctive characteristic that immediately sets it apart from the majority of Abolboda species, which typically produce spikes or heads of multiple flowers. This reduction in flower number, if true to form, represents a notable morphological specialization within the genus and may correlate with specific pollinator relationships or ecological conditions. Abolboda uniflora is native to the tropical savanna and highland wetland regions of South America, distributed across the Guiana Highlands and adjacent areas of Venezuela, Guyana, northern Brazil, and possibly Colombia. The plant occupies seasonally flooded grasslands, wet tepui slopes, boggy meadows, and white-sand savannas underlain by the ancient Precambrian rocks of the Guiana Shield. The vegetative form is consistent with other members of the genus, comprising a basal rosette of narrow, linear, stiff leaves arising from a compact stem. The solitary or near-solitary flower borne on the erect scape is trimerous, with three petals likely colored blue to violet, as is characteristic of many Abolboda species. This single, conspicuous flower may serve as an effective signal to pollinators in the open savanna landscape. The Xyridaceae family to which Abolboda uniflora belongs is a small family of approximately 400 species, primarily distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of South America, Africa, and Asia, with the genus Abolboda representing the exclusively South American core of the family.
