Abrahamia antongilensis is a woody plant in the family Anacardiaceae, order Sapindales, endemic to the island of Madagascar. The species epithet antongilensis refers to the Bay of Antongil in northeastern Madagascar, one of the most biodiverse regions of the island, situated within the humid lowland and montane rainforest belt of the eastern coast. The genus Abrahamia was established to accommodate a group of Malagasy trees and shrubs formerly included in the broader genus Rhus or related genera of the Anacardiaceae, and it is named in honor of Zacharias Abraham, a Malagasy botanist. Abrahamia antongilensis is a tree or large shrub with alternate, simple to pinnately compound leaves characteristic of the cashew family. The leaves are likely leathery in texture, an adaptation common in tropical forest trees, and may have slightly waxy surfaces. Like other members of the Anacardiaceae, this species possesses resinous tissues that produce aromatic compounds, which in related genera such as Mangifera, Anacardium, and Rhus are associated with allergenic potential and ecological functions including herbivore deterrence. The inflorescences are typically paniculate, bearing small, inconspicuous flowers with five petals and a superior ovary, consistent with the general floral plan of the cashew family. The fruits are drupes or drupe-like, often with a fleshy mesocarp and a hard endocarp enclosing a single seed. Madagascar is recognized as a global biodiversity hotspot, with over 90 percent of its plant species found nowhere else on Earth. The genus Abrahamia, with most of its species endemic to Madagascar, contributes significantly to this remarkable botanical heritage, occupying rainforest, dry deciduous forest, and transitional woodland habitats across the island.
