Lupinus hautcarazensis is a lupine endemic to the Huayhuash or Cordillera Blanca mountains in the Ancash region of Peru, one of the highest mountain ranges in the tropics. It grows in rocky puna grasslands and the margins of high Andean wetlands, producing dense spikes of blue or purple flowers and silky-hairy palmate leaves. The high Peruvian Andes support extraordinary lupine diversity, with many species named for specific localities.
