Abolboda granularis is a herbaceous monocot in the family Xyridaceae, order Poales, native to the tropical savanna and highland wetland regions of South America. The species epithet granularis refers to a granular or finely textured surface quality observed in certain morphological features of the plant, such as the leaf epidermis or scape. Like its congeners, Abolboda granularis grows in the nutrient-deficient, seasonally flooded grasslands and white-sand savannas of the Guiana Highlands and adjacent lowland regions of Venezuela, Brazil, Guyana, and Colombia. The plant forms basal rosettes of narrow, stiff, linear leaves that emerge from a compact caudex or rhizome. These leaves are adapted to resist desiccation during dry seasons and to tolerate prolonged inundation during wet seasons, a dual stress tolerance that is characteristic of many Xyridaceae members. The flowering scapes are slender, erect, and considerably taller than the vegetative rosette, terminating in a dense spike of small flowers. Xyridaceae flowers are typically trimerous, with three petals that are frequently yellow or blue-violet, and three fertile stamens. Abolboda granularis inhabits some of the most ecologically specialized environments in South America, including tepui slopes, granitic outcrops, and Amazonian campina ecosystems. These habitats support a remarkably high degree of plant endemism due to their geographical isolation and extreme soil conditions. Pollinators visiting Abolboda flowers are primarily small bees and other generalist insects attracted to the brightly colored petals. The genus Abolboda contains approximately 20 recognized species, all restricted to the Neotropics, and represents an important component of the ancient Gondwanan lineage of Xyridales.
