Koanophyllon puberulum

Koanophyllon puberulum is a perennial herb or shrub in the family Asteraceae, belonging to the genus Koanophyllon, a Neotropical group previously included in the large genus Eupatorium before being separated based on morphological and molecular evidence. The genus Koanophyllon contains approximately 120 species distributed from Mexico and the Caribbean through Central America and into northern South America. The epithet 'puberulum' means 'minutely hairy' or 'finely pubescent,' referring to a covering of very short, fine hairs on stems or leaves that may be visible under magnification. Like other Koanophyllon species, this plant produces opposite, petiolate leaves, often with toothed or serrate margins. Stems are erect or somewhat sprawling, becoming woody at the base in shrubby forms. Capitula are small and discoid, borne in dense flat-topped or rounded corymbs that collectively form large, conspicuous inflorescences. Individual capitula bear typically five tubular florets that are white, cream, or pale lavender. The pappus consists of capillary bristles. Achenes are five-angled. Koanophyllon species inhabit forest margins, secondary vegetation, shrublands, and disturbed habitats across the lowland to montane Neotropics. They are often important early successional species that colonize disturbed areas after deforestation or agricultural abandonment. Many Eupatorium relatives provide abundant nectar for butterflies, particularly monarchs and other migrating species, making them ecologically significant in tropical habitats.
