It belongs to a genus of medium to large trees producing cylindrical or bottle-brush-like flower spikes with numerous white to cream stamens and bipinnately compound leaves. The genus Stryphnodendron includes the commercially important barbatimão (S. adstringens), known for its tannin-rich bark used in traditional medicine.
