Aa matthewsii

Aa matthewsii is a terrestrial orchid classified in the family Orchidaceae, order Asparagales, and the Andean genus Aa. The species epithet matthewsii commemorates Andrew Matthews, a British botanist and plant collector who worked in Peru during the nineteenth century and assembled extensive collections of Peruvian plants, providing significant material for the description of South American species at that time. Aa matthewsii likely occurs in the highland regions of Peru, the country most associated with Matthews's botanical expeditions. The plant is a compact, ground-dwelling herbaceous perennial, growing in the open high-altitude grasslands and puna ecosystems of the central or southern Andes at elevations typically ranging from about 3,000 to 4,500 meters or higher. Like all members of the genus Aa, this orchid produces a basal rosette of firm, narrow to elliptic leaves that remain low to the ground, sheltered from cold winds and frost. An erect flowering stem rises from the center of the rosette, bearing a tight spike of small flowers arranged along its length. The flowers of Aa matthewsii are small and structurally complex, featuring the three sepals, two petals, a differentiated lip, and a reproductive column typical of all orchids. These floral structures are adapted to facilitate pollination by specific small insects that visit the plant in its high-altitude habitat. In the nutrient-poor, acidic soils of high Andean grasslands, Aa matthewsii relies on mycorrhizal fungal associations for nutrient uptake — a fundamental biological dependency of most terrestrial orchid species.
