Aa riobambae is a terrestrial orchid in the family Orchidaceae, order Asparagales, belonging to the Andean genus Aa. The species epithet riobambae refers to Riobamba, a city and province in the central highlands of Ecuador, indicating that this orchid was first collected or is characteristic of the Andean region surrounding that city. Riobamba lies in the Chimborazo Province of Ecuador, an area of spectacular Andean landscapes including páramo grasslands and the volcanic slopes of Chimborazo — one of South America's highest peaks — making it a botanically rich territory with many endemic plant species. Aa riobambae is a compact herbaceous perennial adapted to the high-altitude páramo ecosystems of central Ecuador, where elevations typically range from 3,000 to over 4,500 meters. Like all members of genus Aa, this orchid produces a basal rosette of firm, lance-shaped to elliptic leaves from which an erect flowering stem rises, bearing a dense spike of small bilaterally symmetrical flowers. The flowers exhibit the standard orchid floral architecture: three sepals, two lateral petals, a specialized lip, and a reproductive column with both male and female elements fused. In the páramo, the plant grows among bunchgrasses, cushion plants, and low shrubs, often in well-drained volcanic soils. The mycorrhizal symbiosis between the orchid's roots and soil fungi is essential for nutrient uptake and seedling establishment in these nutrient-limited soils. Ecuador's páramo is critically threatened by grazing pressure, burning, and climate change, making conservation of this habitat essential for Aa riobambae and the many other endemic plants found in the region.
