Definition
The biological conversion of atmospheric nitrogen gas (N2) into ammonium (NH4+), usable by plants. Carried out by free-living bacteria (Azotobacter) and symbiotic bacteria (Rhizobium in legume nodules), nitrogen fixation is essential to the global nitrogen cycle.
