Stipule

Definition

A small leaf-like appendage at the base of a petiole, occurring in pairs in many plant families. Stipules vary from tiny scales (roses) to prominent leafy structures (sweet peas) to modified spines (black locust). Their presence or absence is a taxonomic character.
