Aa lorentzii

Aa lorentzii

Aa lorentzii is a species of terrestrial orchid in the family Orchidaceae, order Asparagales. A member of the Andean genus Aa, the species is named in honor of Paul Günther Lorentz, a German-Argentine botanist and phytologist who worked in Argentina during the nineteenth century and made important contributions to the botanical exploration of South America, particularly the Andean regions of northwestern Argentina. Aa lorentzii is a compact, ground-dwelling herbaceous perennial that inhabits the high-altitude grasslands and puna ecosystems of the South American Andes, likely occurring in the Andean regions of northwestern Argentina and adjacent Bolivia — the areas most closely associated with Lorentz's botanical fieldwork. Like other members of its genus, this orchid produces a basal rosette of firm, elliptic leaves adapted to the cold, UV-intense conditions of high-altitude environments. From the rosette, a slender erect flowering stem emerges, bearing a dense raceme of small flowers with the complex bilateral symmetry typical of the Orchidaceae family. The flowers feature a differentiated lip, sepals, and petals arranged to guide pollinators toward the reproductive column. In the high-altitude puna grasslands, Aa lorentzii grows among cushion plants, bunchgrasses, and low shrubs in often rocky or well-drained soils. The plant relies on mycorrhizal fungi for nutrient uptake and seedling establishment in these nutrient-poor substrates. Conservation of the Andean puna ecosystem in northwestern Argentina is essential for the persistence of this and many other high-altitude endemic plant species. Habitat degradation from overgrazing and burning represents the primary threat.
