Abies pinsapo, commonly known as Spanish fir or hedgehog fir, is an evergreen conifer in the family Pinaceae, order Pinales. It is endemic to a small area of the Baetic Cordillera in southern Spain, primarily in the provinces of Málaga and Cádiz, where it grows on north-facing limestone mountain slopes at elevations of 1,000 to 2,000 meters. There is also a closely related population in Morocco (Abies marocana) sometimes treated as a subspecies. Abies pinsapo inhabits a Mediterranean montane climate with cool, moist winters and dry summers. It is highly distinctive within the genus for its radially arranged needles — projecting outward on all sides of the branch in a bottlebrush pattern — rather than the typical pectinate (comb-like) arrangement of most firs. Needles are stiff, bluish-gray to glaucous green, and blunt-tipped. This arrangement gives branches a rounded, spiky appearance, reflected in the common name hedgehog fir. Mature trees develop a broadly pyramidal form, reaching 20 to 30 meters. Seed cones are erect, cylindrical, 10 to 18 centimeters long, maturing from green to brown and disintegrating at maturity. Due to its restricted range, Abies pinsapo is listed as an endangered species, threatened by climate change reducing rainfall and moisture in the Andalusian mountains. It is widely cultivated in European and North American botanical gardens and parks, with glaucous cultivars particularly prized.
