Abolboda bella is a perennial herb in the family Xyridaceae, order Poales. The specific epithet bella means beautiful, a name that likely reflects particularly attractive or showy flowers or overall plant appearance compared to other members of the genus Abolboda. Within Xyridaceae, flower colour and morphology range from blue and violet to white, and the delicacy of the three-petalled corolla gives many species an elegant appearance. Abolboda bella inhabits the Neotropical region, particularly the Guiana Highlands of Venezuela, Guyana, and adjacent areas, where the genus achieves its greatest diversity. The tepui ecosystem that characterises this region consists of open, waterlogged heathlands and rocky plateaus on ancient Precambrian sandstone, with highly acidic, nutrient-deficient soils. Plants adapted to these conditions tend to have specialised root systems, carnivorous or mycorrhizal relationships, or other traits to cope with low nutrient availability. Xyridaceae plants in this genus bear narrow, often flat or rounded leaves in basal tufts and produce slender flower scapes with terminal heads of flowers. The distinctive three-petalled blue or violet flowers open briefly each day and are bee-pollinated. The fruit is a small capsule with numerous tiny seeds. Abolboda bella is likely restricted to specific microhabitats within the tepui region, as is typical of the highly endemic flora of this globally significant biodiversity area, where hundreds of plant species are found exclusively on the tepui summits and their surrounding slopes.
