Tara spinosa, known as tara or Peruvian tara, is a small to medium-sized tree native to the dry Andean valleys of Peru, Chile, and Bolivia, widely cultivated for its pod-derived tannins. The tree produces showy racemes of yellow-orange flowers, bipinnate leaves, and large orange-red flat pods rich in tannic acid used in the leather industry, pharmaceutical applications, and food processing. Tara is of significant commercial importance as a sustainable source of natural tannins, rivaling synthetic alternatives.
