Aa sphaeroglossa is a terrestrial orchid in the family Orchidaceae, order Asparagales, and a member of the high-Andean genus Aa. The species epithet sphaeroglossa derives from the Greek sphaira ('sphere' or 'globe') and glossa ('tongue' or 'lip'), meaning 'spherical-lipped' or 'globe-tongued' — a name that refers directly to the distinctive rounded, globe-like shape of the lip (labellum) of this orchid's flower. The lip is one of the most diagnostically important parts of orchid flowers, and its distinctive shape in this species provides both its common botanical name and a key feature for taxonomic identification. Aa sphaeroglossa grows as a compact herbaceous perennial in the high-altitude grasslands and shrublands of the Andes. Like other members of its genus, the plant forms a basal rosette of firm, lance-shaped leaves close to the ground, offering some protection from the cold winds and frost events characteristic of páramo and puna habitats at elevations above 3,000 meters. An erect flowering stem rises from the rosette and produces a dense spike of small flowers, each featuring the spherically shaped lip that gives the species its name. This rounded lip morphology likely plays a specialized role in pollinator guidance or mimicry. Aa sphaeroglossa is found in the Andes of South America, with its exact distribution spanning some combination of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, or Colombia. Like all terrestrial orchids, it depends on mycorrhizal symbioses for nutrient uptake and seedling germination. The genus Aa is subject to ongoing taxonomic revision as molecular data refine species boundaries and phylogenetic relationships.
