Hieracium amphichnoum is a perennial herbaceous plant in the family Asteraceae, belonging to the notoriously complex genus Hieracium, the hawkweeds. This microspecies is part of the vast assemblage of apomictic hawkweed taxa recognized predominantly in Europe, where the combination of sexual and asexual reproduction has generated an enormous diversity of morphologically distinct but reproductively isolated lineages. The epithet 'amphichnoum' derives from Greek roots suggesting a relationship to wool or fleecy hairs on both sides, possibly referring to hairs on both leaf surfaces—a feature used in the fine-scale separation of hawkweed microspecies. Like all Hieracium species, H. amphichnoum is a rosette-forming herb with erect scapes bearing one to many yellow ligulate capitula. The leaves are typically oblong to lanceolate, variously hairy on both surfaces with combinations of simple, glandular, and stellate hairs. The phyllaries are dark green to blackish, often glandular-hairy. All florets are ligulate and fertile, producing dark or pale achenes topped with a pappus of white or dirty-white bristles. The taxonomy of this and related hawkweed microspecies is handled differently by various national and regional floras, with some recognizing thousands of distinct species and others treating them more broadly. Hieracium amphichnoum likely occurs in European grasslands, rocky habitats, or woodland margins, consistent with the broad ecological amplitude of the genus. Conservation of hawkweed diversity depends on preservation of traditional low-intensity grassland management.
