This species likely inhabits woodland edges and grasslands in central or eastern Africa, producing the characteristic trifoliate leaves and axillary inflorescences of the cowpea group. Wild Vigna species are valuable as genetic resources for crop improvement of their cultivated relatives including cowpea and mung bean.
