Aa paleacea

Aa paleacea

Aa paleacea is a terrestrial orchid in the family Orchidaceae, order Asparagales, and a member of the Andean genus Aa. The species epithet paleacea refers to the presence of paleae — chaffy, scale-like bracts — which in this species are notably developed on the flowering stem or inflorescence, giving the plant a chaffy or scaly appearance that aids in distinguishing it from closely related Aa species. This morphological character is botanically significant and is reflected in the species name, which derives from the Latin palea, meaning 'chaff' or 'husk'. Aa paleacea grows as a compact herbaceous perennial in the high-altitude grassland habitats of the Andes, including the páramo and puna ecosystems found from Colombia and Ecuador south through Peru and Bolivia. At these elevations, the vegetation is dominated by grasses, cushion plants, and low-growing shrubs well adapted to cold temperatures, high winds, intense UV radiation, and periodic frost. The plant forms a rosette of basal leaves close to the ground and produces an erect flowering spike bearing numerous small orchid flowers. As in all orchids, the flowers of Aa paleacea are bilaterally symmetrical and feature a complex arrangement of sepals, petals, a specialized lip, and a fused column. The scaly or chaffy bracts associated with the inflorescence may serve protective functions in the harsh high-altitude environment. Aa paleacea depends on mycorrhizal fungi for seedling establishment and ongoing nutrient uptake. Grazing, burning, and climate change remain the principal threats to the high-Andean habitats that this species requires for survival.
