Syneilesis palmata is a distinctive perennial herb in the family Asteraceae, native to East Asia, including Japan, Korea, China, and the Russian Far East. The genus Syneilesis contains only a handful of species, all sharing the characteristic of large, palmately lobed or divided leaves that give the genus its common name of 'shredded umbrella plant' or 'tattered umbrella.' The epithet 'palmata' refers directly to the palmate leaf architecture, which is highly unusual within the Asteraceae family. Young emerging leaves are initially covered with dense white woolly hairs that give them a striking spidery appearance in spring, reminiscent of a closed umbrella; as leaves expand, the hairs become sparser. Fully expanded leaves are large, deeply palmately divided into 7–12 lobes, creating an elegant, parasol-like form. The plant reaches 40–80 centimeters tall, with erect stems bearing a terminal cymose panicle of small, discoid capitula with whitish to pinkish tubular florets. Syneilesis palmata grows in moist, shaded forests, stream margins, and woodland clearings at low to montane elevations. Its preference for humus-rich, well-drained soils under deciduous forest canopy places it among the distinctive understory flora of East Asian temperate forests. This species has gained popularity as an ornamental garden plant in temperate horticulture, prized for its dramatic foliage texture. Ecologically, it is associated with diverse fern and forb communities in forest understories. The plant goes dormant in winter and re-emerges in spring.
