Aa fiebrigii is a terrestrial orchid in the family Orchidaceae, order Asparagales, placed within the Andean genus Aa. The species is named in honor of Karl Fiebrig, a botanist and naturalist who conducted extensive fieldwork in South America during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, making significant contributions to the documentation of South American flora, particularly in Bolivia and Paraguay. As with all members of the genus Aa, Aa fiebrigii is a compact, ground-dwelling herbaceous perennial adapted to the high-altitude grasslands, páramo, and puna ecosystems of the Andes. It produces a rosette of basal leaves from which an erect flowering stem rises, bearing a dense raceme of small orchid flowers. The leaves are typically firm and somewhat fleshy, providing the plant with resilience against the harsh climatic conditions of high-altitude Andean environments, including cold temperatures, intense UV radiation, and irregular rainfall. The flowers are small but structurally complex, as is characteristic of all Orchidaceae, featuring a specialized lip that facilitates pollination by specific insect species. Aa fiebrigii likely occupies habitats in Bolivia or adjacent Andean countries given the geographical focus of Fiebrig's botanical work in that region. The species is part of a taxonomically challenging genus, with species boundaries sometimes disputed and subject to ongoing revision as new specimens are collected and molecular analyses are applied. Like many rare Andean orchids, Aa fiebrigii faces threats from the ongoing degradation of Andean grassland ecosystems through agriculture, fire, and climate change.
