Aaronsohnia pubescens

Aaronsohnia pubescens is a small herbaceous plant in the family Asteraceae, order Asterales, classified within the genus Aaronsohnia — a small genus of plants in the daisy family's tribe Anthemideae, native to arid and semi-arid regions of the Middle East and North Africa. The species epithet pubescens derives from the Latin pubescere, meaning 'to become downy' or 'covered with fine hairs', and refers to the presence of soft pubescent (hairy) surfaces on the stems, leaves, or other parts of the plant. This hairiness is a common adaptive trait in plants of arid environments, where a layer of fine hairs can reflect intense solar radiation, reduce water loss through leaf surfaces, and provide some insulation against temperature extremes. Aaronsohnia pubescens grows as an annual or short-lived perennial herb in desert, rocky steppe, and semi-arid scrubland habitats, where it experiences long dry seasons and highly variable rainfall. Like all members of the Asteraceae, the plant produces composite flower heads — pseudanthia composed of numerous individual florets packed together on a receptacle and surrounded by a ring of involucral bracts. The central disc florets are tubular and bisexual, while the outer ray florets, if present, bear strap-shaped corollas that enhance the visual attractiveness of the flower head to pollinators. The genus Aaronsohnia is named in honor of Aaron Aaronsohn, a pioneering botanist of the early twentieth century who studied the flora of the Levant region. Aaronsohnia pubescens is likely distributed across arid regions of Israel, Egypt, the Sinai, Jordan, or the Arabian Peninsula. Drought tolerance is a defining ecological characteristic of this species.
