Abies kawakamii, commonly called Taiwan fir or Kawakami fir, is an evergreen conifer in the family Pinaceae, order Pinales. It is endemic to the island of Taiwan, where it inhabits the high mountain ranges of the Central Mountain Range, typically at elevations between 2,800 and 3,900 meters. This makes it one of the highest-altitude trees on the island, forming forests and krummholz near the upper treeline alongside other subalpine conifers and alpine shrubs. The species is named in honor of Takiya Kawakami, a botanist who contributed to the study of Taiwanese flora in the early twentieth century. Mature trees develop a narrow, spire-like crown suitable for shedding the heavy snowfall that occurs at these elevations. Trunks are straight and cylindrical, with grayish bark. Needles are flattened and linear, dark green on the upper surface with distinct white stomatal bands on the underside. Pollen cones are small and reddish; seed cones are erect, cylindrical, 6 to 10 centimeters long, and mature from green to brown, disintegrating at maturity in the characteristic manner of all true firs. Abies kawakamii is an important component of Taiwan's alpine ecosystems, providing shelter and food resources for high-altitude wildlife. Due to its restricted geographic range and the vulnerability of alpine ecosystems to climate warming, the species is subject to monitoring by conservation authorities in Taiwan. It is not commonly cultivated outside its native island.
