Abies sibirica, commonly known as the Siberian fir, is an evergreen coniferous tree belonging to the family Pinaceae within the order Pinales. Native to Siberia, the Russian Far East, and parts of Central Asia, this species thrives in boreal and subalpine forests, often forming extensive taiga stands alongside spruce and larch. The tree typically grows to heights of 20 to 30 metres, developing a narrowly conical crown with horizontal to slightly upswept branches. Its bark is smooth and grey on younger trees, becoming fissured with age. The needle-like leaves are flat, soft, and dark green above with two white stomatal bands on the underside, measuring 2 to 3 centimetres in length. Like all true firs, Abies sibirica bears erect cylindrical cones that disintegrate on the tree at maturity, releasing winged seeds. Cones are typically 5 to 8 centimetres long and mature from green to brown. The species is highly frost-tolerant, adapted to the extreme continental climate of its native range where temperatures can plummet to minus 50 degrees Celsius. Siberian fir produces an aromatic resin and essential oil from its needles and bark, valued commercially in the perfume and pharmaceutical industries. The wood is lightweight and resinous, used for paper pulp and construction. In its native ecosystem, the species provides critical habitat and food for numerous birds and mammals, including crossbills that feed on its seeds.
