Abolboda dunstervillei is a perennial herb in the family Xyridaceae, order Poales, endemic to the Neotropical region. The species is named after Galfrid Clement Keyworth Dunsterville, a British army officer and passionate amateur botanist who worked extensively in Venezuela during the mid-twentieth century, contributing significantly to knowledge of Venezuelan orchids and highland flora. This commemorative naming reflects the important role that dedicated naturalists have played in documenting the extraordinary biodiversity of the Guiana Highlands. Abolboda dunstervillei, like all members of its genus, inhabits the tepui ecosystems of northern South America, where ancient sandstone table mountains harbour a highly endemic flora adapted to nutrient-poor, waterlogged, and seasonally harsh conditions. The plant bears the typical Xyridaceae growth form: tufted, grass- or rush-like leaves arising from a basal rosette, slender scapes carrying terminal inflorescences, and flowers with three blue or violet petals that open briefly each day. Pollination is effected by bees. The family Xyridaceae is most diverse in the Neotropics and sub-Saharan Africa, with Abolboda being a strictly Neotropical genus. Tepui ecosystems, where this species occurs, represent one of the world's last great wilderness areas, largely inaccessible and consequently poorly collected. New species continue to be discovered in these habitats, and the conservation of tepui ecosystems is essential for preserving species such as Abolboda dunstervillei.
