Abrahamia itremoensis

Abrahamia itremoensis

Abrahamia itremoensis is a tree or shrub in the family Anacardiaceae, order Sapindales, endemic to Madagascar, named after the Itremo Massif, a sandstone plateau and mountain range in the Amoron'i Mania Region of central Madagascar. The Itremo Massif reaches elevations of up to 1,800 meters and is classified as an Important Plant Area due to its outstanding botanical diversity and high degree of endemism. The massif supports a mosaic of high-altitude grasslands, ericaceous heathland, gallery forests, and rocky outcrops that host numerous plant species unique to this formation. Like the Ibity Massif, the Itremo Massif represents one of the few remaining examples of intact high-altitude vegetation in Madagascar's central highlands, a landscape that has been dramatically transformed by fire, overgrazing, and agricultural expansion. Abrahamia itremoensis is a woody plant consistent with the genus Abrahamia, an endemic Malagasy group within the cashew family Anacardiaceae. It likely exhibits alternate leaves, resinous bark and tissues, paniculate inflorescences of small five-merous flowers, and drupaceous fruits characteristic of the family. The species may grow at mid to high elevations in montane forest, transitional scrubland, or woodland habitats in the vicinity of the Itremo Massif. The genus Abrahamia with more than twenty species is one of the most species-rich endemic plant genera in the Anacardiaceae on Madagascar, and its members collectively represent a significant portion of Malagasy Anacardiaceae diversity. Conservation efforts targeting the Itremo Massif are critical for protecting endemic species such as Abrahamia itremoensis from the ongoing pressures of habitat degradation.
