Swartzia simplex is a tree or shrub in the legume subfamily Papilionoideae native to tropical South America and the Caribbean. The genus Swartzia contains around 180 species of neotropical trees and shrubs, some of which produce showy yellow flowers. This species has a simpler leaf structure than many of its relatives, growing in lowland tropical forests and producing the characteristic papilionoid flowers of the subfamily.
