Abacopteris gracilis is a slender fern species in the family Thelypteridaceae, widespread across tropical and subtropical regions of the Old World. The specific epithet gracilis, meaning slender or graceful in Latin, reflects the delicate, finely divided appearance of the fronds in comparison with coarser-textured relatives in the genus. This delicate morphology is a common adaptation among forest understory ferns that maximize leaf surface area while minimizing structural investment, allowing efficient light capture in low-light environments beneath the forest canopy. Abacopteris gracilis produces fronds from a short-creeping rhizome, with a slender stipe supporting a narrowly lance-shaped blade divided into pinnae that taper gradually toward both the frond apex and base. The pinnae themselves may be further lobed or divided, creating a finely dissected, feathery appearance consistent with the species name. Sori are borne on the lower surface of fertile pinnae in rows along the veins, protected by small kidney-shaped indusia typical of the Thelypteridaceae family. Both the stipe and blade surfaces are typically clothed in scattered hairs that are unicellular or short-stalked, a feature used in taxonomic diagnosis. The species favors moist, shaded habitats including streamside forest, humid ravines, and the floors of lowland to montane tropical forest, where it grows in well-drained but consistently moist organic soils. Its geographic range likely encompasses parts of tropical Asia and the Pacific islands, where it contributes to the rich pteridophyte diversity of humid forest ecosystems.
