The genus Copaifera is well known for producing copaiba oil, a fragrant oleoresin tapped from the trunk that has numerous traditional medicinal uses and commercial applications in cosmetics and biofuels. This species has distinctively thick, leathery leaves as indicated by its epithet, adapted to the seasonally dry conditions of its native range.
