Aitchison's hawk's-beard

Crepis aitchisonii is a perennial herb in the family Asteraceae, belonging to the genus Crepis, commonly known as hawk's-beards. The genus comprises approximately 200 species distributed across the Northern Hemisphere, with particular richness in the Mediterranean region, Middle East, and Central Asia. This species is named in honor of James Edward Tierney Aitchison, a Scottish surgeon-botanist who conducted extensive plant collections in Afghanistan and the northwestern Himalayan region during the nineteenth century. Its distribution likely falls within or near the Afghan-Pakistani highlands or adjacent mountain systems, consistent with Aitchison's primary collection areas. Like other hawk's-beards, Crepis aitchisonii is a rosette-forming herb with a deep taproot enabling survival in dry rocky habitats. Leaves are typically oblanceolate to lyrate-pinnatifid, with the terminal lobe often the largest. Stems are erect, branched above, bearing multiple yellow ligulate capitula. All florets are ligulate and bisexual, producing linear cypselas (achenes) topped with a pappus of white or yellowish simple bristles that facilitate wind dispersal. The involucre is composed of two series of phyllaries, the inner ones erect and the outer ones shorter and spreading. Crepis species inhabit disturbed ground, dry grasslands, rocky slopes, and montane meadows. Several species are weedy in disturbed habitats. The taxonomy of Central Asian Crepis remains complex, with ongoing revisions based on morphological and molecular data.
