Abies holophylla, commonly known as Manchurian fir or needle fir, is a large evergreen conifer in the family Pinaceae, order Pinales. Its native range spans northeastern China, the Korean Peninsula, and the Russian Far East, including regions of Manchuria and Ussuri. The species inhabits mixed temperate and boreal forests at low to moderate elevations, often in association with Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis), Mongolian oak, and various broadleaved species. The epithet holophylla means whole-leaved, referring to the needles, which have pointed rather than notched tips — an unusual characteristic in the genus that makes Abies holophylla distinctive among its relatives. Mature trees can reach 30 to 40 meters in height, with a straight trunk and broadly pyramidal crown. Bark is grayish-brown and becomes deeply furrowed in old specimens. Needles are dark lustrous green above with pale stomatal bands beneath. Seed cones are cylindrical and erect, greenish-brown when young, turning grayish or brownish at maturity before disintegrating on the tree. The timber of Abies holophylla is commercially important in Korea and China, used in construction, furniture, and paper production. The species has also been planted in reforestation projects and in windbreaks across its native region. In cultivation, it is less common than some other Asian firs but is grown in botanical gardens for its distinctive foliage and stately habit.
