Abies yuanbaoshanensis is a critically rare evergreen coniferous tree in the family Pinaceae, order Pinales, known only from a single mountain location in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, southern China. The species takes its name from Yuanbaoshan, the mountain where it was discovered. It represents one of the most restricted distributions of any fir species globally, with an extremely small population that has drawn significant conservation concern. Like other members of the genus Abies, it is an evergreen tree with a conical to columnar crown, flat needle-like leaves, and erect cylindrical cones that disintegrate at maturity to release winged seeds. The needles are dark green and glossy on the adaxial surface and bear white stomatal bands on the abaxial surface, a characteristic shared across the genus. Abies yuanbaoshanensis grows in subtropical montane forests at relatively low elevations for a fir species, reflecting its southerly distribution. The surrounding forest community includes broad-leaved evergreen and mixed deciduous species typical of the Sino-Japanese floristic region. As a relict species with extremely limited range, it is vulnerable to habitat disturbance, invasive species, and climate change. Conservation efforts include in-situ protection within nature reserves and ex-situ cultivation in botanical gardens. The species is listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List, making its study and preservation a botanical priority of international significance.
