Abies ziyuanensis is a rare evergreen coniferous tree in the family Pinaceae, order Pinales, native to a restricted area of Guangxi and Hunan provinces in southern China. The species is named after Ziyuan County in Guangxi, where populations were first documented. Like Abies yuanbaoshanensis, it represents a relict conifer surviving in subtropical montane habitats far south of the main distribution centre of the genus Abies in the Northern Hemisphere. The tree exhibits the characteristic features of the genus: a conical evergreen habit, flat linear needles arranged on branches and typically whitened beneath with stomatal bands, and erect cylindrical cones borne on upper branches that disintegrate at maturity to release winged seeds. The bark is smooth and pale greyish on young trees. Abies ziyuanensis grows in mixed montane forests at elevations that allow it to tolerate warm summers while benefiting from cool, moist conditions. It is frequently associated with other conifers and broadleaved evergreen trees characteristic of southern Chinese montane flora. The species faces pressure from habitat loss, logging, and the impacts of climate change on its restricted ecological niche. It is recognised by Chinese and international conservation authorities as a species requiring urgent protection. Botanical surveys continue to refine understanding of its population size, genetic diversity, and ecological requirements, information essential for effective conservation planning in one of the world's most biodiverse regions.
