It grows in alpine meadows, rocky slopes, and high grasslands at elevations often exceeding 4,000 meters, making it one of the more altitude-tolerant members of the genus. It forms part of the specialized alpine flora of the Tibetan Plateau, one of the world's highest ecosystems.
