Hieracium shoolbredii is a perennial herb in the family Asteraceae, belonging to the taxonomically complex genus Hieracium, the hawkweeds. This species was named in honor of William Andrew Shoolbred, a British botanist and naturalist active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, who contributed to documenting the flora of the British Isles and nearby regions. The patronym suggests this microspecies was described from collections made in Britain, Ireland, or possibly Scandinavia, where Shoolbred conducted botanical work. Like the vast majority of named Hieracium microspecies, H. shoolbredii is an apomictic taxon—reproducing largely or entirely through asexual seed production—which allows the stabilization and perpetuation of specific morphological combinations over many generations. The plant forms a basal rosette of leaves that are variously hairy with combinations of simple, stellate, and glandular hairs. The scape or stem bears one to several yellow capitula composed entirely of ligulate bisexual florets. Phyllary indumentum is critical for identification within Hieracium, with the number and type of glands, simple hairs, and stellate hairs all taxonomically significant. Achenes are dark, ribbed, and bear a pappus of whitish or pale brown bristles. This microspecies likely inhabits rocky outcrops, grassland, heathland, or woodland margins consistent with British hawkweed habitats. Conservation of rare Hieracium microspecies in Britain is recognized as a biodiversity priority, particularly in Scotland where diversity is highest.
