Zapoteca tehuana is a shrub or small tree native to the Tehuantepec region of Oaxaca, Mexico, a major center of plant diversity and endemism in Mesoamerica. It produces spherical flower heads with numerous stamens and bipinnately compound leaves typical of the genus, growing in the tropical dry forests and scrubland of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. The Tehuantepec region of southern Mexico supports many endemic plant species due to its geographic isolation.
