Aa argyrolepis is a terrestrial orchid belonging to the family Orchidaceae, order Asparagales, and the genus Aa — a group of ground-dwelling orchids characteristic of high-elevation Andean habitats in South America. The species epithet argyrolepis derives from Greek roots meaning 'silver-scaled', likely referring to distinctive features of the floral bracts or leaf surfaces that give the plant a silvery appearance under certain conditions. As with other members of genus Aa, this species grows as a rosette-forming herbaceous perennial, producing a dense cluster of basal leaves that hug the ground and protect the plant from the harsh environmental conditions of its native montane range. The flowering stalk emerges vertically from the center of the rosette and bears numerous small, closely arranged flowers, a feature shared across the genus. The flowers are typically intricate in structure, as befits the Orchidaceae family, though they are modest in size compared to many ornamental orchids. Aa argyrolepis inhabits the treeless páramo and puna grassland zones of the Andes, ecosystems defined by cool temperatures, high solar radiation, and distinct wet and dry seasons. These high-altitude grasslands support a specialized flora including many endemic plant species. Pollinators of Aa orchids in these environments are generally small insects adapted to the high-Andean climate. The species faces conservation pressures from livestock grazing, agricultural expansion, and the ongoing effects of climate change on Andean ecosystems. Detailed botanical studies of the genus Aa remain limited due to the remoteness of its habitats.
