Abatia rugosa is a shrub or small tree in the family Salicaceae, order Malpighiales, with the specific epithet rugosa derived from the Latin rugosus meaning wrinkled or rugose, indicating that this species is characterized by distinctly wrinkled or corrugated leaf surfaces. Rugose leaf texture in plants is often associated with a deeply impressed venation pattern where the veins are sunken into the upper leaf surface, creating a network of raised ridges between the veins that gives the leaf a corrugated or bullate appearance. This leaf texture can enhance the capture of diffuse light in shaded forest interiors and may also create microenvironments on the leaf surface that influence water retention and gas exchange dynamics. The genus Abatia comprises approximately ten species distributed across the montane regions of South America, primarily in the Andean highlands, where they occupy cloud forest, montane shrubland, and forest margin habitats. Abatia rugosa likely grows in similar montane forest habitats, where its distinctive wrinkled leaves distinguish it from smooth-leaved congeners such as Abatia glabra. The leaves are alternate and simple, with toothed or crenate margins and stipules. Flowers are small and arranged in racemes or panicles, and the fruit is a capsule. The family Salicaceae, to which Abatia belongs, has been greatly expanded through molecular systematic studies to include numerous tropical genera previously placed in the now-defunct Flacourtiaceae. Abatia rugosa plays a role in the shrub layer and forest edge communities of Andean montane ecosystems, contributing to biodiversity and habitat structure in high-altitude South American forests.
